This book has much the same dynamic between the two, initially, and by the end of day 1 of Baley's 3-day trip to Aurora, Gladia comes off embittered towards Baley due to all of his questioning of her about her "husband's" death (a robot). Then, he gives the solution to the mystery: that in Gladia's absence, Amadiro questioned and tested Jander via trimensional viewing (When Baley states that these experiments might have accidentally led to Jander's deactivation, Amadiro snaps and states the experiments were completely harmless. It was one of my absolute favorites as a kid! Amadiro says he may have heard it from someone, but cannot remember whom. It also includes a major character casually committing adultery with no thought of the spouse. Isaac Asimov's later science fiction novels were written at the insistence of his publisher.
