Louise Bourgeois, who died on Monday aged 98, was a Franco-American sculptor whose organic, often sexually suggestive, works made her a feminist icon and influenced a generation of artists. In 1940, Bourgeois gave birth to their son Jean-Louis and in 1941, she gave birth to Alain. In 1955, Bourgeois became an American citizen. Louise Bourgeois was born in France on Christmas day, 1911, to Josephine and Louis Bourgeois. That same year, 1938, Bourgeois opened a print shop next to her parents' business, where she met art historian Robert Goldwater (1907-1973). Her parents owned an antique tapestry gallery in the suburbs of Paris, and Josephine repaired the worn tapestries. For her, it was as if no time had passed when she created an aquatint and drypoint in the 1990s depicting two of her small boys in the tub. The Dia Museum in Beacon, New York, features a long-term installation of her phallic sculptures and a spider. By the age of ten, Louise began weaving with her mother and other seamstresses. She also studied with the Cubist master Fernand Léger in 1938. Léger recommended sculpture to his young student.
