Definitely a different kind of experience well worth your time.The Overlanders is an Australian Western from an English production company that follows all the expected plot developments as dependable but dull Chips Rafferty leads a small group who drive a herd of cattle 1500 miles across country rather than shoot them or allow them to fall into the hands of the Japanese. Still, I could watch those landscapes forever and feel the tensions of moving cattle across a landscape that was never made for them. So you get a cattle drive, a rag-tag bunch of character who have to overcome tough odds, you get horses and danger; but there is no shoot-outs, no human threat, no heightened stakes. Nice location photography, with fresh young Daphne Campbell providing a pleasing distraction from sweaty men and moving beef.The Overlanders is a fairly solid, old-fashioned Western, which is given an extra push because it is set in Australia, produced by Ealing Studios, with its very English sensibility.
