His family's benefactor, always working behind the scenes, is Father Morgan (Colm Meaney), benevelovent but steely in his determination when Tolkien's romance with Edith threatens his chances of getting an Oxford scholarship. It's very watchable and moving. The film is largely a series of episodes of how various things (events, people, other works etc.) In my view this movie has erred too much to that end. I've read lots of criticism about this film. We won’t be able to verify your ticket today, but it’s great to know for the future.Regal The film looks at the formative years of J.R.R. Tolkien. With Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, Colm Meaney, Derek Jacobi.
Tolkien's determination to find Geoffrey, all with the help of a soldier named Sam, devolves into hallucinatory scenes where Tolkien literally "sees" dragons and what would eventually become the Eye of Sauron and the Nazgûl, unfurling across the hellscape of No-man's-Land. Anyone who enjoys watching public school boy 'banter' being thrown around over cups of tea are in for a treat. The result is polite, plodding and unconvincing, like most movies about famous writers. Nope, a young Tolkien whose not very likeable and rather lofty for someone who supposedly comes from such a poor background. "Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, make a good tale, and take a good deal of telling anyway." I loved the focus on language and the weight it can carry, It made me feel that words are in their own right living creatures. The film I felt showed how WW1 had made a considerable impression on Tolkien and some of the battle scenes that were later written into The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit.
July 28, 2020 This is somewhat admirable given Tolkien's famous distaste for allegory but at the same time there's too much of the Middle Earth texts in the film to avoid making the connections.
I found myself moved to tears watching this beautiful film about this amazing man. A beautiful movie looking at Tolkien's life from childhood to the great war.Nicholas Hoult as Tolkien is superb, as is all the cast, and the direction and speed of the film are just right. This is a very reductive approach to literature (as well as the artistic imagination of Tolkien) and it has a couple of unfortunate results. This never happened. It has now been over 100 years since WWI and we should remember the courage and sacrifices of this so called Lost Generation. I enjoyed watching him grow up, find love, heartbreak, and then journey into a nightmare that was probably the seeds for future use in his writing. If you're "into" Tolkien, you know the deep pool of fascination. Here are just a few examples (NB they include spoilers). Everything We Know About | it is not about events, but it is about poetry and music. Was this review helpful? As the movie opens, we are told it is "The Somme, France, World War I", and Tolkien is in the trenches and in bad shape. Still, the plot is pretty formulaic and doesn't hold that many surprises. 40 out of 72 found this helpful.
