I was pretty mesmerized from the beginning, although when the story's focus shifted from the woman, Hilde, to her future husband, it wasn't quite as captivating. Start by marking “Woman of Straw” as Want to Read: Could he trust them? Tyrannical, but ailing, tycoon Charles Richmond becomes very fond of his attractive Italian nurse, Maria.

Offers life of luxury, travel, possibly marriage..."Catherine Arley was a French/American writer of suspense that I recently discovered and I wasn't disappointed to say the least.
Ralph Richardson in particular gives a great performance, playing the meanest tycoon this side of Montgomery Burns, with a bit of "The Magic Christian"'s Sir Guy Grande thrown in for good measure. He wears similar well-tailored clothing and has the same cool, slightly bored manner he affected in those movies.
He plans to help her marry him, then to help him change his will, and (perhaps) then to help her achieve her inheritance, all for a payoff of one million pounds. A small time thief is recruited by a mobster to help with the racketeering.
