I only recommend you not to try learning them both at same time, I once tried taking Spanish and Italian together (they are not as close as Portuguese and Spanish, but very similar nonetheless) and it simply didn’t work. It therefore seems to me like a better idea to get used to Portuguese first since you'll master pretty much all the sounds you'll need from the very beginning. That’s why in portuguese there’s A LOT more use to the simple past if compared to spanish, because we dont have a present perfect, we either use that or imperfect.
