The music and dancing are excellent, and the physical settings actually have a certain darkness to them (cloudy scenes, as well as nighttime scenes). The lead actress, Diana Ross, brings out emotion through song. As a writer, it was fun seeing this movie as I saw a very unique retelling on the Wizard of Oz theme (such as the feature of various dancers/models in the film, Lena Horne playing the fairy godmother, and much more details that make the Wiz film worthwhile to watch). Maybe a younger crowd would appreciate it more. When she threatens to throw Toto into a fiery cauldron, Dorothy nearly gives in until the Scarecrow hints to her to activate a fire sprinkler switch, which she does. Relive all of the magic of this beloved musical when Dorothy is whisked away to the enchanting wonderland of Oz, where she encounters the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion. I recommend this refreshing and different version of The Wizard of Oz.

I know there are plenty of other good movies, but this is one from my childhood and I just love it! Video availability outside of United States varies. Imaginative boy Ben transforms his city by bringing colorful street art to life, armed with a magic paintbrush and the classic sounds of Motown. Whereas "The Wizard of Oz" is more of a child's film, the intended audience for "The Wiz" is a few steps above that. Rent $3.99 I DO have this in my library, and although I've probably seen it 50+ times, I never grow tired of it.
